What’s the story?
In 1985, Sepp Fischer opened what’s still known as Vienna’s first gasthaus brewery (“Erste Wiener Gasthausbrauerei”). No big brand—just a proper Brauhaus in Döbling where the beer is brewed on-site and served fresh. Locals have been coming for decades; tourists who find it get a real taste of how Viennese beer culture actually lives.
The beer
You’ll find a Helles (pale lager), a malty Dunkles, and seasonal stuff like the famous Weihnachtsbock in winter. Everything’s brewed in-house with traditional recipes and poured straight from the tap. No gimmicks—just solid, drinkable beer that fits the place.
Inside and out
Wooden tables, a bit of brewing gear, and a no-fuss vibe. There’s a beer garden when the weather’s good, and the place is wheelchair-accessible and dog-friendly. Groups of 10–100 can book for parties or events; for a normal dinner or a few beers, you can often just turn up. Weekends get busy, so calling ahead doesn’t hurt.
The food
Classic Austrian: Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz, goulash, homemade apple strudel. Fresh, regional ingredients and generous portions. On Saturday and Sunday they’re open from noon with a shorter, good-value lunch menu—handy if you’re out for a weekend stroll in Döbling.
How to get there
Billrothstraße 17 in the 19th district (Döbling). Tram 37 or 38, then about two minutes on foot; bus 35A stops almost at the door. Parking in the area is limited, so public transport is the better bet.
