Beer and Goulash

Hearty goulash and a robust lager: why this pairing works and where to find it in Vienna.

Beer and goulash – classic Austrian beer and food pairing in Vienna

Beer and goulash is a no-brainer. Goulash is rich, paprika-spiced, often with bread or dumplings—you want a beer with enough malt to stand up to it but a clean finish so you don’t get overwhelmed. Viennese lager, Märzen, or Dunkles all work. More pairings in Austrian food with beer and the Vienna Brewery Guide.

Why it works

Malt and body balance the spice and richness; the finish clears your palate. Dunkles adds a bit of roast that fits the depth of the stew. More on dark Austrian beer.

Where to get it

Fischerbräu in Döbling (Billrothstraße 17) does goulash and other Austrian classics with house Helles, Dunkles, and seasonal beers. Proper Brauhaus setting—since 1985.
